Fred Bauer, pensionierter Kriminalbeamter mit langer Dienstzeit bei der Kripo Frankfurt, stellt in diesem Buch seinem alten Freund und Krimiautor Peter Ripper die Lebensgeschichte des letzten echten Frankfurter Ganoven Friedrich Gürtler alias "die Schnut" alias "Der Mond von Texas" vor. Anhand von historischen Quellen zu Gürtlers Leben und realen Frankfurter Kriminalfällen zeigt Bauer das Bild eines Verbrechers, der sich vom kleinen Gauner der Kaiserzeit zu einem Mann entwickelte, dessen Beruf und Handwerk es war, Straftaten zu begehen. Ein Mann, der diesem Metier mit immer klarer aufgestellten Spielregeln nachging, die Täter und Behörden bekannt waren und die von beiden Seiten akzeptiert, ja sogar respektiert wurden; Gürtler hatte schließlich einen festen Platz in der Gesellschaft des Nachkriegsfrankfurt inne. Die Beerdigung dieser stadtbekannten Figur war ein letztes großes Ausrufezeichen hinter einer Laufbahn, die ihresgleichen sucht. Ironische Blicke auf aktuelles Zeitgeschehen und auf sich selbst lässt der Autor bei seinen Schilderungen nicht aus.
